MEET Xay

From the son of a refugee to Mayor of Newport, a lifetime of putting Rhode Islanders first.

Xay Khamsyvoravong, pronounced "Sigh," is the former Mayor of Newport and has built a career taking on tough problems in both business and government. His family lived the American Dream, starting with his father's arrival as a refugee from Laos in 1979. Xay made the most of every opportunity his family was given, waiting tables, serving coffee, and coaching youth sports to help pay his way through Brown University. His mother, Dr. Linda Rexford, was a pediatrician in Providence who taught him the value of community and service.

After a successful career in business, Xay returned to school at Roger Williams School of Law, where he met his wife, Alicia. They married and moved to Newport, where he was elected to the City Council and unanimously chosen by his peers to serve as Mayor. In 2024, he was re-elected as a Councilor At-Large.

As Mayor, Xay took on Newport's biggest challenges head-on. He lowered taxes for working families, made real progress on middle-class and workforce housing, increased investment in schools, and built climate-resilient infrastructure through the first resiliency department in the state. When Newport Hospital's Birthing Center was threatened, Xay helped lead the fight to keep it open.

Over a two-decade career, Xay has helped communities nationwide reach their financial goals.
